Press release of Shinawatra University for the agreement with CNR on February 12, 2016

Shinawatra University and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche(‘CNR’, or National Research Council of Italy), Republic of Italy have jointly inaugurated academic and research collaboration in the fields of agriculture, food, social issues, the environment, technology and cultural heritage for the purpose of expediting the promotion and development of mutual business benefits.

On February 12, 2016 at 10.00 a.m., a signing ceremony to mark the initiation of joint academic and research between Shinawatra University and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (‘CNR’, or National Research Council of Italy), Republic of Italy, was conducted at Shinawatra University’s Bangkok Building, Vibhavadee Rangsit Road.

Those participating in this ceremony were honoured by the attendance of former Prime Minister H. E. Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra and H.E. Mr. Francesco Saverio Nisio, Italian Ambassador to Thailand.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Boonsom Lerdhirunwong, President of Shinawatra University, explained that the CNR intends to expand its collaborative research in Asia by acknowledging the potential and opportunities conferred by geography.

On the basis of recommendations and liaison made by Mr. Stefano Leandri Executive President of the GL Group in Italy and Mr. Carlo Gardella Managing Partner of AdvisingAsia and Managing Director of GL Thailand, CNR has decided to participate with Shinawatra University in this important project. Their collaboration will strengthen good relations and expedite joint research projects between Italy and Thailand in the future.

This joint project ensues from H.E. Prime Minister Yingluck’s visit to Italy during September 2013 on the occasion of the 145th anniversary of the establishment of Italo-Thai diplomatic relations. The academic and research collaborative agreement between Shinawatra University and the CNR covers agriculture, food, environment, technology and cultural heritage etc. This joint project will also expand into smart cities, information technology, agriculture, foodstuff etc. It will also include tangible business development processes for commercial outcomes in its final version.

The Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (‘CNR’) is Italy’s National Research Council, which is constituted administratively as a public agency. In 2010, the CNR published 5,551 papers in various leading world publications on the ISI database. There are 78 registered patents owned by the CNR. Moreover, the CNR’s annual budget amounts to 50,000,000,000 Baht; it engages 8,000 researchers and 2,000 technicians. At present, the CNR conducts research to an extent of 5% in Asia & Australia, 57% in Europe and 32% in North America.

Shinawatra University (www.siu.ac.th) is an international university accredited by the Royal Thai Education Ministry which specializes in information technology, environmental and energy management, business administration and new media. The university consists of students from 24 countries pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate study programs. Furthermore, Shinawatra University has developed expertise in areas of advanced research which help improve Thailand’s competitiveness through various projects including smart cities, innovative information and technology, strategic management etc.
